Prof. Li joined University of Alberta in 1998, after worked as a PDF at Penn State University (1995–97). He is an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Eng. at U. of Alberta, a visiting professor at National University of Singapore (2004, 2012) and MIT (2011) as well as a visiting scientist in a Biophysics group of NICT (Japan, 2005). He is on editorial board for 10 journals. Dr. Li has in excess of 330 publications. Education: B.Sc. in Solid Mechanics (USTC, 1982), M.Sc. in Solid-State Physics (Zhongshan U., 1985), PhD in Materials Physics (USTB, 1990), PhD in Metallurgical Engineering (McGill, 1995).

He attained his PhD at Lancaster University from the School of Physics and Chemistry. He worked at Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences as an Assistant Professor and then at Case Western Reserve University in the USA as a Research Fellow. Mo joined Loughborough University as a Research Fellow, and then progressed to Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor. He has published more than 200 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editor and editorial board member for several reputed journals.

Arief Suriadi Budiman received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Institute of Technology, Bandung (ITB), Indonesia, his M.EngSc in materials engineering from Monash Univ., Australia and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University, CA in 2008. During his doctoral candidacy at Stanford’s Department of Materials Science & Engineering under the supervision of Professor William D. Nix (MRS Von Hippel Award 2007), Dr. Budiman received several research awards (MRS Graduate Silver Award 2006, MRS Best Paper 2006) and contributed to several high-impact journal publications (Acta Materialia, Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Electronic Materials). As a graduate student, he gave two symposium invited talks as well in the MRS spring and fall meetings in 2006. More recently Dr. Budiman has been awarded the prestigious Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Director's Research Fellowship to conduct top strategic research for the energy and national security missions of the Los Alamos National Laboratory's. At the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Los Alamos, Dr. Budiman’s research program involves nanomaterials for extreme environments with potential applications in advanced energy systems including for next generation nuclear power reactors Currently, at the Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD), Dr. Budiman is leading a dynamic, young group researching nanomaterials and nanomechanics and their implications for extending the extreme limits of materials as well as their applications in the next generation energy technologies (solar PV, extreme environments, energy storage, etc.). His work has also recently received the famed Berkeley Lab Scientific Highlights twice in May 2010 and June 2013 (the latter was for his novel, innovative characterization technique that enables thin silicon solar PV technology). He has had extensive industrial exposures through his work as well as consulting with some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley and in Solar PV R&D (research and development) areas – amongst others, San Jose-based SunPower Corporation and Stanfordbased Bay Area Photovoltaics Consortium (BAPVC), in addition to national energy labs /academic research experiences. He also ecently spent a year in MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Boston, MA, as one of its Outstanding (Foreign) Faculty Award Recipient to conduct research in energy (Solar PV, as well as next generation energy storage/Li-ion). In SUTD in Singapore, he is currently running a multi-million dollars research grant program on Solar PV and more particularly on enabling ultra thin (< 80 micron) silicon solar cells sponsored by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of the Singapore’s Government. He has been invited to give invited lectures/seminars on solar PV/solar cells materials and technology in various top international scientific/technological conferences (EU PVSEC 2016/2014, PVDAYS 2015, MRS PV WORKSHOP 2014, SOLAR PV MIT 2015). Dr. Budiman has authored/co-authored several high-impact journal publications (Acta Materialia, Solar Energy Materials & Solar Cells, Procedia Engineering, Materials Science Engineering A). He has also recently published a book “Probing Crystal Plasticity at the Nanoscales – Synchrotron X-ray Microdiffraction” (Springer 2015). He has two U. S. Patents and one pending.

Yanxiang Li completed his PhD at the age of 27 years from Tsinghua University in 1989 and postdoctoral studies from Liverpool University, both in Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is now a tenured professor in Tsinghua University School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the deputy director of Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials Processing Technology, Ministry of Education, P R China. He has published more than 150 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member of repute.

Dr. G. Sundararajan, obtained his B.Tech (Metallurgy) from IIT Madras in 1976 and M.S. and Ph.D. from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. in 1979 and 1981 respectively. He returned to India in September 1982 and joined Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) as a scientist. He was at DMRL till 1997 and then was appointed as Director of International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) from September 1997 till December 2015. From February 2016, he has been serving as a Professor at IIT Madras. He has published more than 220 papers during the course of his career. His papers have been cited more than 6900 times resulting in a h-index of 43 and i 10. Index of 131.

During the course of his research career at DMRL and ARCI, Dr. Sundararajan has made outstanding contributions to the areas of tribological behaviour (erosion, sliding wear, abrasion) of metallic materials, composites and coatings, high temperature deformation and fracture behaviour of superalloys and other materials, laser surface modification (surface alloying cladding, transformation hardening) and laser materials processing (cutting, drilling & welding) of engineering materials and towards the development of novel coating, micro arc oxidation coating, cold spray coating and EB-PVD coating technology. He is also responsible for establishing Center for Laser Processing of Materials (now a part of ARCI), Centre for Solar Energy Materials at ARCI, Hyderabad and Centre for Fuel Cell Technology and Centre for Automotive Energy Materials at ARCI, Chennai. At ARCI, as its Director, Dr. Sundararajan had made notable contributions to be development, demonstration and commercialization of materials-based technologies. Over the last 10 years, over 25 technologies have been transferred to 35 private industries located all over India.

Yue Li, a full professor in Institute of Solid State Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He received his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics at Institute of Solid State Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. He worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow or Visiting Scientist in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, respectively after he got his PhD degree. His research interests mainly focus on the interfacial self-assembly, applications and sensors of micro/nano-structured arrays. He has published more than 100 papers in international journals including Chem. Soc. Rev., Coord. Chem. Rev., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., ACS Nano, Adv. Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., Small, Acta Mater. etc. His publications have been cited more than 6000 and his H-index is 41. He has been serving as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Advances in Nanomaterials and editorial board members of Nanotechnology, Nano Futures, Current Nanoscience etc.

Yu Lung Chiu did his PhD project on studying the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni3Al based alloys at the University of Hong Kong. Then he worked as a postdoctoral fellow studying the strength and deformation mechanism of TiAl alloys. After lecturing at the University of Auckland for about three years, he started his current appointment at the University of Birmingham in early 2008.

Yu Lung Chiu is interested in understanding the plasticity of solid materials by studying crystal defects and microstructure evolution mainly using electron microscopes. Currently he is working on magnesium alloys, titanium aluminides, and nanostructured model materials including copper.

Guang-Ping Zhang got his PhD in 1997 from Institute of Metal Research(IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences and completed postdoctoral studies at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 2001. He is a full professor and a group leader of mechnical behavior of small-dimensional materials in Shenayng National Laboratory for Materials Sciences, IMR, a member of Fatigue and Fracture Committee, of CMRS and a member of EuroSIME Technical Committee. He has published more than 100 papers in reputed journals and authorized 5 patents.

Dr ZhiLi Dong received his BEng and PhD degrees from Tsinghua University, China. Dong was trained as a materials scientist and engineer during his undergraduate and postgraduate study at Tsinghua University, China and Osaka University, Japan. He has about thirty years experience in x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy of materials, and has authored and co-authored about 200 journal papers. He serves as an editorial board member for International Journal of Mining, Materials, and Metallurgical Engineering, and for International Journal of Microscopy.

Nanomaterials / nanotechnology

He graduated from Thiagarajar college of Engineering, Madurai, affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University in 1997. He received his Ph.D degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2004 and post doctoral fellowship in University of Aveiro, Portugal till May 2008 and then he has been with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. He was appointed as an Associate Professor in 2012 and Professor in 2017. He has received many awards including BIRAC-SRISTI GYTI Award 2016, Silver Award for Best Innovator at 7th India Innovation Initiative - i3 National Fair 2015, appreciation award under MLM (More from Less for Many) category from Gandhian Young Technical Innovation Award 2015. He has authored more than 75 journal and conference papers. One US patent was granted and 4 Indian patents were applied. Three students completed their Ph.D and 7 students are currently doing their Ph.D under his supervision. He has completed 6 projects as a PI worth of about Rs. 5.5 crore and there are 4 on-going projects worth of Rs.2.4 crore. He completed 1 consultancy project, 4 projects as a co-PI.

Dewei Chu is an associate professor and Australian Research Counicl Future Fellow at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of New South Wales, Australia. He received his PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Science in 2008. A/Prof. Chu has published ~100 papers in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Materials Chemistry A, C, ACS Interface & Applied Materials, Nanoscale, etc.

Dr Dewei’ research interests include synthesis and characterisation of nanomaterials as well as their device fabrication for electronic applications (random access memories, transparent thin film transistors, electric double layer transistors, and artificial synaptic device, etc.). He is also interested in the design of functional materials for their applications in catalysis (water splitting and reduction of carbon dioxide).

Dr. Gupta obtained his B.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) from IIT Delhi in 1999 and Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2006. After Ph.D., He worked as a Research Engineer at Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) for two years and then returned to India to join academia at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus in 2008. He has been appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2013 and as the Head of the Department since 2016. He has published more than 120 papers, with citations more than 1100 times resulting in a h-index of 19 and i-10 index of 29.

Anshu Gaur has completed his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After his PhD he worked at Applied Materials Inc.
